Chamber welcomes the announcement of plans to four-lane the key transportation route in NEBC

The Fort St. John & District Chamber of Commerce welcomes the announcement by Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom that the province will be moving forward with a long term plan to four-lane the highway between Fort St. John and the Alberta Border.

Chamber President Andrew Tylosky explains, “We recognize the massive investment this venture will require. However, to ensure certainty and keep construction disruptions to a minimum, it would be encouraging to see timelines and budget figures set for this project announced in the near future. The Chamber would also encourage funding participation from the Federal Government on this important infrastructure investment.”

The Fort St. John Chamber has been a strong advocate of improvements to this vital transportation route. In May of this year, The Fort St. John Chamber was successful having a Transportation policy adopted by the BC Chamber of Commerce. The policy calls on the Provincial Government to make immediate improvements to the worst sections of the highway and develop a plan to complete the twinning within the next 5-10 years.

While the Chamber is encouraged by the announcement of the immediate improvements planned in the coming years, lacking from the announcement were budget figures and timelines for the complete four-laning of the route.
