July First Brings in Two Tax Changes

On July 1st, the HST will be implemented and there will no longer be a separate PST. For many products and services, there is no change in tax level, however the bill to consumers will appear different. For some products or services, the changes of HST will be seen as increased taxes (ie. hair cuts, cable bill) and for a few items there will be decreased taxes (ie. hotel rooms, alcoholic beverages). The vast majority of consumer products will not see a change in tax levels.
The carbon tax increases on July 1st. The carbon tax on a litre of gasoline will go from its current rate of $3.62 to $4.82 per litre. Diesel will increase from $4.14 to $5.52 per litre.
