JOB DESCRIPTION

Duties:

* Prepares complete design packages including specifications and sketches covering minimum and preferred details of trucks and equipment involving: a) determining users’ specific operating conditions and requirements for vehicles and equipment by reviewing budget submissions, conducting field visits and by verbal or written communications; b) studying manufacturer’s manuals and selecting appropriate components; c) recommending inclusion or elimination of available options; d) utilizing existing specifications where possible, adapting existing designs as necessary or designing an item to meet users’ needs and discussing design changes with manufacturers’ representatives; e) using appropriate formulas to perform design calculations and to calculate various aspects of vehicle and equipment performance.
* Investigates vehicle and equipment operational problems and works with the manufacturer and with field personnel to develop solutions; maintains performance information.
* Decides when repair or replacement of vehicles or equipment is appropriate by reviewing files and printouts giving history of repairs, etc., Hydro mechanics’ reports of vehicle or equipment condition and examining the unit; supplies users with temporary replacements from the fleet where possible and reviews rental agreements to ensure that rental is necessary and that users’ needs cannot be met by the fleet; recommends sale or retention as a spare.
* Visits manufacturers’ and installers’ plants/shops to: a) assess their potential ability to perform the work required; b) conduct preproduction meetings to clarify requirements; c) inspect work in progress and assess any deviations from design or specifications; d) assist in resolving problems such as work scheduling or obtaining parts; e) review current status of production.
* Assembles data for the capital budget by projecting fleet requirements involving: a) analyzing various computer printouts and vehicle performance information to determine number of units which will need to be replaced; b) discussing users’ needs with field personnel; c) calculating financial feasibility of replacing units and preparing a summary sheet outlining the costs.
* Reviews tender requirements with suppliers. Analyzes tenders for purchase or modification of vehicles or equipment, recommends which proposal to accept; provides justification for recommending non low bid tenders.
Obtains clarification of bid details from suppliers as necessary.

Qualifications:

* Graduation with a National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology (Design Option) from BCIT or equivalent post secondary schools.
* Successful candidate will normally have a minimum of 36 months experience as a Vehicle Services Design Drafter or equivalent.
* Satisfactory performance on this job requires approximately 36 months to acquire additional knowledge/skills necessary to perform the full scope of the job.
*Class 5 driver's license

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:
Knowledge of mechanical engineering design concepts, methods, and processes.
Knowledge of manufacturing and equipment installations.
Knowledge of truck and manufacturing industry.
Knowledge of vehicle services practices and procedures.
Knowledge of Autocad design.
Ability to prepare complex design packages for trucks and equipment.
Ability to determine economic feasibility and perform financial analysis.
Analytical and costing skills.
Interpersonal communication skills.
Negotiation skills.

* Experience in large complex fleet environment and building vehicle specifications an asset.
* This is a busy position with tight deadlines. Previous experience in an engineering office would be an asset.
* Majority of work is performed within the office environment. Some incumbents are exposed to all weather conditions while frequently working in the field.
* Occasionally exposed to hazards from operating, testing and/or construction equipment when at field sites.
* Occasional driving.

Flexible work model role definitions
===========================
Our four role types identify the degree of flexibility an employee could have to work from home based on the type of work they do. The flexibility for an individual job is up to the manager for each position and the operational requirements. Employees also have the right to work full-time from the office if they prefer. All of our roles require at least some in-person time.

IBEW/Field – No option to work from home
Resident – Works primarily (4+ days per week) in the office.
Hybrid – May be able to work from home up to 3 days per week.
Remote – Works from home 4+ days per week
